More coffee, anyone

Cultiva Coffee's Web site says it will be putting a coffee bar inside the Indigo Bridge bookstore, next to Ivanna Cone, in the Creamery Building. I guess you can never have enough coffee shops in the Haymarket.

Also, my friend The Lincolnite is reporting that Scooter's plans another location at the former Amigo's/Kings drive-through-only spot at 33rd and Pioneers.

Not sure how he scooped me on that one. He must have some kind of inside source.

Is Texas Roadhouse that good?

Or are all the other casual dining chains losing their luster?

The family and I tried to go to Texas Roadhouse for the first time Saturday, and I knew it was a bad sign when I saw people parking their cars by Lowe's and Office Depot and walking over.

We got there at 5:10 and there was already a 45-minute wait. Tell me, where else in Lincoln can you go that early and have to wait that long?

Is it always that busy on Saturdays? I know the state Special Olympics competition was in town, but other than that, I don't know of a whole lot else going on. I can't imagine what the place will be like when Husker football starts.

A 'nu' vibe downtown

Those of you hoping for a Pepperjax Grill will be disappointed to know they are not going into the old Homer's/Erbert & Gerbert's space.

The tenant is instead nuVibe Juice & Java, a combination coffee and smoothie shop.

It's a local operation with one location at the Pioneer Woods shopping center at 70th and Pioneers. The downtown shop will be about three times as big, and the owner said she plans on introducing some additional fare, such as breakfast and lunch items, that aren't in the exisiting location.

For those of you who are earth conscious, nuVibe uses only free-trade coffee and has all natural products for its smoothies and gelato.

The shop should be open by mid-September. For more info on nuVibe, go to www.mynuvibe.com

News on a prominent downtown building

Sorry the postings have been a little bare lately, I've been on vacation the past few days.

But now I'm back, so let's get down to business.

Someone has bought the downtown building at 126 N. 14th St. that used to house Homer's and then Erbert & Gerbert's. I talked to the guy and he said he has at least one committed tenant. He said he can probably announce who it is, but wanted to check first and asked me to get back with him later this week.

So by Thursday or Friday, I should be able to tell you what's going in there.

Fitness center glut?

It's been pretty well-documented in this blog and elsewhere that we seem to have an abundance of sandwich shops and coffee shops here in Lincoln.

You know what else we seem to have a lot of? Fitness centers.

A couple of weeks ago there was a building permit filed for a new building to be built in the strip mall that is directly south of SouthPointe Pavilions. There was also a second permit for interior finish for its first tenant, which just happened to be Anytime Fitness.

According to its Web site, that will be the third Anytime Fitness in Lincoln. An old phonebook I have from 2005 listed only one then.

Snap Fitness's Web site says it plans two new locations, bringing its total in Lincoln to seven.

In addition, there are 3 Curves and 2 Strides -- both women's-only clubs.

BryanLGH and Madonna both opened fitness centers in south Lincoln in 2006. And don't forget the new Northwest YMCA set to open next year.

By my count there have to be close to three dozen fitness centers in Lincoln currently. I can remember a time not that long ago when you could count the number on two hands.

It's Pepsi movie Friday

Friday is the day for the Coke to Pepsi switch, according to a Douglas Theatres employee I asked when I was there to see "Stepbrothers" on Saturday. That jibes with what I was told earlier about the Coke contract ending in July.

How long has it been since there's been something other than Coke products served at the movies? Anybody know? I certainly can't remember, and I've lived in Lincoln most of my life.

My wife and I are both Pepsi fans, so it will now be a little easier to stomach paying $4.25 for a large drink. (Has anybody noticed the price increases there since Marcus took over? Yikes!)

For all you Coke fans, sorry for your loss.

Costco rumors

I've now talked to two people in the past couple of months who say they know someone who works at Costco in Omaha and that those workers say the company is actively seeking out a site in Lincoln.

I've heard from other people, mainly commercial real estate brokers, who say Costco is interested in south Lincoln, possibly around 40th and Yankee Hill, but also might be eyeing the 48th and O area.

Even if Costco is eyeing Lincoln big time, in this kind of retail environment it could take awhile before anything happens.

Bennigan's not closing

I've already gotten e-mails from two people about Bennigan's, so I thought I should mention it here even though we have a story on JournalStar.com.

Yes, Bennigan's did file for bankruptcy, and, yes, all the company-owned stores either have already or will soon shut their doors.

HOWEVER, the Lincoln Benningan's is franchised and will remain open, according to Dennis Hill, who is the local general manager.

So go, enjoy your Bennigan's fix.

Visiting Steve & Barry's

Anyone been in Steve & Barry's lately? I went on Sunday, and it sure looks like a store in trouble.

About half the lights were turned off as well as the escalator. And I only saw a couple people working in the whole store, upstairs and downstairs.

On the other hand, the shelves looked fully stocked.

I think the date for liquidating the company has been pushed back to mid-August, but if you're a Steve & Barry's fan, I'd suggest getting there in the next couple of weeks.

Coming soon: pooch pampering

The newest PetSmart, at 28th and Pine Lake, opens Monday.

One of the big features of the store will be a PetsHotel, which offers kenneling services and also "doggy daycare." However, I'm told the PetsHotel won't actually open until Aug. 26.

The store has a grand opening set for Aug. 2. No word yet on whether there will be a "kitty carnival":)
