Tight legislative race in District 49 will result in recount
By The Associated Press
A tight race for second place is forcing a recount in the race for the District 49 seat held by Sen. Leroy Louden of Ellsworth.
Louden won Tuesday with 72 percent of the vote. Just six votes divided challengers Michael Jacobson, who finished second, and third-place finisher Scott Bolinger in final unofficial results.
The Secretary of State’s Office said Wednesday there will be a recount.
Because the margin between Jacobson and Bolinger was less than 1 percent of the winner’s vote total — Louden got 2,989 votes — the recount is automatic. That would be about 30 votes, in this case, and the margin between Jacobson and Bolinger was only six votes.
Results of the recount won’t be known until June.
Because Nebraska’s legislative races are nonpartisan, the top two vote-getters advance to the general election.
