NU's Parsons second on balance beam

Nebraska’s Emily Parsons ended her stellar gymnastics career Saturday with a runner-up finish on the balance beam at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga.
The senior from St. Charles, Mo., tied tied with Utah’s Ashley Postell for second with a overall score of 9.9. Parsons received scores of 9.95, three 9.9s and an 9.85 from the panel of judges.
Fellow Husker senior Desire’ Sniatynski finished tied for 12th on the uneven bars.
“I’m very proud of Emily and Desire’ for the tremendous job they did tonight at the event finals,” NU coach Dan Kendig said.
“I’m happy that Emily was able to finish second on beam — that’s impressive, especially when it was her only event and she had quite a while to wait through the second flight.
“Desire’ also had a tough rotation to compete in, but she went out strong and hit her routine.”
The two, along with junior Tricia Woo, were the only Huskers competing at the meet.
“The sad part is that two incredible careers ended tonight,” Kendig said. “Our two seniors were first-team All-Americans, and they have left an outstanding legacy as a class.”
Nebraska will play host to the NCAA Championships next year at the Devaney Sports Center.
Kendig is hopeful that this year’s national success carries over to next season.
“This weekend has helped lay the groundwork for the type of season we are out to accomplish next year,” Kendig said. “I’m optimistic and excited about Nebraska gymnastics and next year starts right now.
“One year from now, we will host the NCAA Championships in Lincoln. We know that accomplishing the journey for that weekend will only be by hard work and focus for the next 12 months.”
Also Saturday, Georgia’s Suzanne Yoculan was named the national coach of the year for the fifth time.
Yoculan, who has said she plans to retire after the 2009 season, lead the GymDogs to their fourth straight national title Friday night.
