Texas A&M hands NU another softball loss

The Nebraska softball team's conference season is starting to resemble the movie “Groundhog Day.”
Once again Saturday, the Huskers did some things right in a 6-0 loss to No. 5 Texas A&M at Bowlin Stadium. But just like in most of their games, the Husker pitchers had trouble consistently throwing strikes and the offense couldn't get much going against All-American Megan Gibson.
"If our pitchers cannot give up so many free bases, the score might be a little different," coach Rhonda Revelle said.
The Aggies scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and never looked back.
Gibson, who now boasts a 28-1 record, pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out 13. The Huskers' 13 strikeouts were a season high. Gibson also hit her 13th home run of the year in the top of the fifth.
Husker junior Molly Hill gave up only two hits and allowed one earned run through the first four innings. However, Hill walked four batters in the early innings and gave up four straight hits for three runs in the top of the fifth before being relieved by sophomore Alex Hupp.
"There were bright spots with all of our pitchers today," Revelle said. "It's just searching for that consistency."
The Husker defense again shined Saturday. Besides one early error, the Husker defense turned a double play and provided protection for the pitchers.
"The defense has been working really hard," shortstop Whitney Barrett said. "We are going to back our pitchers up, and we do that 100 percent every game."
Barrett started the double play in the top of the fifth to get Hupp out of a jam. Barrett also recorded two of the Huskers' three hits. Barrett's multi-hit hit effort was her second this week.
The 19-24 Huskers finish their series vs. A&M today at noon and will try to stop getting the same result in Big 12 play.
"We just have to keep chipping away," Barrett said.
