Several Huskers shine Friday at Drake Relays

A full contingent of Nebraska track and field athletes is among the 8,000 athletes competing this weekend at the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.

The Huskers got some top efforts during Friday’s competition, including a runner-up finish by Kayla Wilkinson in the women’s javelin.

Wilkinson, a senior from Deshler, recorded a toss of 177 feet, 7 inches. Ruby Radocaj of Minnesota won with a 179-11 toss. 

In the men’s long jump, NU’s Nicholas Gordon was third with a leap of 24-8¼ and LeRon Williams eighth at 23-4.

Kim Shubert led a quartet of Huskers in the women’s high jump, finishing third at 5-10½. Teammates Erin Hannon, Audrey Svane and Epley Bullock finished 10th, 12th and 14th, respectively.

“It was tough today with the conditions, but I am happy to improve my mark on the year,” Shubert said. “With better weather, I think I would have cleared the next bar (6-0).”

Nebraska sprinters Dax Danns and Scott Wims both qualified in the men’s 100 meters and helped the Husker 400 relay win its heat in the third-fastest time.

In the 100, Wims was second in his heat in 10.63 seconds, while Danns was fourth in his heat with a :10.56 clocking. They were joined on the 400 relay by Dan Christensen and Lukas Hulett and ran a :40.55.

The NU women’s 400 relay finished fifth in its heat and failed to advance.

Nebraska’s Lehann Fourie advanced in the men’s 110 hurdles, but teammates Tyrell Ross and Jamie Ryder did not.

The Huskers had three women compete in the 100 hurdles, with Nikita Eades advancing, but Arna Erega and Karyn LaCour failed to qualify.

Other Husker finishers Friday included: Seth Burney, fifth in the men’s pole vault; Keith Lloyd, 10th in the men’s shot put; Rachel Birtles and Natalie Willer, 12th and 19th, respectively, in the women’s pole vault; Austin Braman, sixth in the men’s javelin; and the ninth-place men’s 6,400 relay.

The Husker women’s distance medley relay finished fifth in 11:48.52, the 10th-best time on NU’s all-time chart.

In the college division men’s 400 relay, the Doane quartet of Kedrick Kelley, D’Artagnan Dai’re, Maurice Smith and Paulvince Obuon recorded the second-fastest time (:41.2) in the prelims.

The Nebraska Wesleyan 1,600 relay of Andy Coppersmith, Jason Peters, Evan Knight and Chris Wolf recorded the sixth-fastest time of 3:16.56. Doane had the 11th-fastest time and failed to advance.
